This show chronicles the life and work of Alma Thomas (1891-1978). Raised in rural Georgia, Thomas was Howard University’s first art department graduate and the first Black artist to have a solo show at New York’s Whitney Museum. The Phillips spotlights many of her watercolors, aerial landscapes and colorful, large-scale abstractions that celebrate beauty and the environment.
